Ptuj – A City of Sustainable Practices and a Green Future
Ptuj, the oldest town in Slovenia, is not only rich in history and cultural heritage, but also in its forward-looking vision. As the recipient of the Slovenia Green Destination Bronze Label, Ptuj is establishing itself as a sustainable destination that respects the environment, the local community, and its visitors.
In recent years, we have implemented numerous activities focused on the sustainable development of the Ptuj destination, with the aim of achieving balanced tourism management, reducing environmental impacts, and improving both the quality of life for local residents and the experience of visitors.
VISITOR SURVEYS
We placed strong emphasis on understanding the needs of key stakeholders and therefore conducted visitor surveys.
The collected data provides a foundation for future planning, adapting the tourism offer, and designing targeted sustainability measures.
MANAGING TOURISM FLOWS
To reduce pressure on the most frequently visited areas, we systematically promoted lesser-known attractions, local experiences, and authentic content across our communication channels. This contributed to a better spatial distribution of tourist visits and encouraged the discovery of less explored parts of the destination.
SUSTAINABLE EVENT ORGANIZATION
In organizing events, we followed sustainable principles by prioritizing the use of natural and environmentally friendly materials while avoiding single-use plastics. In this way, we reduced waste generation and simultaneously raised awareness among visitors about the importance of responsible environmental behavior.
SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Special attention was dedicated to sustainable mobility. In 2025, we introduced new bus routes that provide better accessibility for both residents and visitors while reducing the need for private car use. This measure contributes to reducing traffic congestion, noise, and pollution. We also acquired a new electric vehicle for free transportation of residents and visitors, significantly enhancing the city’s sustainable transport offering.
PROMOTING BOUTIQUE, LOCAL OFFERINGS
At the same time, we continued to encourage the development of boutique and locally inspired offerings within the historic town center. Such initiatives strengthen the identity of the destination.
