Explore the Poetovio Archaeological Park and experience the Roman times

Themed guided tours

Learn about Poetovio’s rich history on a guided walk through the Poetovio Archaeological Park and taste Roman mulsum wine.

A guided tour of the Poetovio Archaeological Park combines archaeological sites, museum collections and exhibits. The tour ends with a sample of mulsum, an authentic Roman spiced wine.

The Poetovio Archaeological Park presents the heritage of ancient Ptuj, the largest Roman settlement on Slovenian soil, and brings together the town’s archaeological heritage.

Along the way, we will see:

  • A COPY OF THE BUILDING INSCRIPTION OF THE EMPEROR HADRIAN
As a young officer, Hadrian travelled from Italy to Aquincum (Budapest), and had a large altar dedicated to Jupiter erected in Poetovio. When he became emperor, he supported the development of the young colony by financing the construction or renovation of the 200-meter stone bridge over the River Drava, and the renovation of the main road that led through Poetovio to the north in 132.
  • NUTRICES
Nutrices are known as divine wet nurses. All social classes of Poetovio turned to Nutrices, and the cult was apparently very popular in the town, considering the large number of inscriptions and/or depictions found.
  • A COPY OF THE RELIEF OF THE SUN GOD
This monument and other finds in Muzejski Trg suggest the existence of a shrine dedicated to Mithras, i.e. Mithras shrine IV in Ptuj.
  • PANORAMA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
The slopes of the hill hide well-preserved remains of various buildings – urban villas, warehouses, shrines, workshops, roads and other structures. Today, the hill is a green corner of Ptuj with hiking trails and descriptions of the archaeological treasures hidden underneath.
  • A COPY OF THE ALTAR DEDICATED TO LIBER AND LIBERA
The deities on the altar are associated with fertility, wine and viticulture.
  • ORPHEUS MONUMENT
This magnificent marble monument is thought to date back to the 3rd century. The five-meter monolith is probably still standing where it was raised by the Romans. Its central story shows Orpheus playing the lyre, hence the name of the monument.
  • A STATUE OF ROMAN EMPEROR TRAJAN
The period of Roman history beginning with Trajan’s reign is known as the golden age. In 114 AD, the Roman Senate gave him the title of Optimus (the best). During his reign, Poetovio became a self-governing entity, COLONIA ULPIA TRAIANA POETOVIO.
  • ROMAN WINE MULSUM
We will end the tour with a tasting of Roman spiced wine – mulsum.

Poetovio or Petoviona?

The name most frequently used in the works of ancient writers and on stone monuments is the name Poetovio (with variants Petovio, Petabio, Petavio, Poetavio, Petobio, Patavio, Potobio, Potabio) or the Greek spelling (Ποτόβιον, Παταύιον, Παταβίων, Πετουβιωνικόν) or the abbreviation C (Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio).
The Slovenian Ptuj and German Pettau are directly derived from the Latin name, and Petoviona is its conventional Slovenian form.

Ptuj is considered the oldest town in Slovenia. There are not many gems where cultural heritage, history, winemaking tradition, folk cultural heritage, archaeology and natural heritage are so closely intertwined in the historic heart of the town. The town played a crucial role in important historical moments, and left its mark across past two millennia.

Finds go back even further in history, which is why the archaeological heritage is one of the hallmarks of the old town on the Drava.
