The relief with the image of the god Sol was discovered during the archaeological survey for the construction of the road past the Dominican monastery. This monument and other finds in Muzejski Trg suggest the existence of a shrine dedicated to Mithras, i.e. Mithras shrine IV in Ptuj. Sol – the sun is the center of the cosmos, and the ruler of the stars and planets in Roman mythology. Every day it races across the sky in a burning chariot pulled by wild horses. The cosmic bearer of life energy is linked to other oriental sun deities and mysteries, including Mithras. A fragment of the monumental marble relief shows Sol with a nine-point crown of rays, wearing a tunic and flapping cloak.
