The wine and food adventure includes learning about, exploring and experiencing Ptuj’s rich, thousands of years old wine culture and heritage. It will take you on a journey from the beginnings and the wine culture of the Celts and the hedonistic Romans, through the winemaking tradition of the monks in the medieval town of Pettau, to town wine merchants in the Art Nouveau period and today’s Ptuj. You will uncover the secrets of the oldest wine cellar in Slovenia, learn about local wine varieties, and experience a special wine tasting in the tunnels under Ptuj Castle. Our journey through the town and thousands of years of its wine culture will continue with a visit to a nearby winery, where you will connect with the land, the vines and the winegrowing experience of the host.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

After meeting at the car park beneath the Ptuj Castle, we will enter the mysterious castle hill tunnels and taste selected fine wines in complete darkness and silence. This will allow you to sense and feel the wine in a completely different dimension.

We will continue to explore wines’ characteristics in the town vineyard beneath the Ptuj Castle – in the very heart of the town. You will learn about the grape harvesting tradition and wine as a pillar of the town’s identity, and enjoy a basket of local delicacies.

We will walk past the houses of famous wine merchants to the Osterberger wine cellar and store at Ptuj’s oldest hotel – Mitra Hotel, where we will hear about the thousands of years of wine culture in Ptuj.

A stroll through the town streets will bring us to Ptujska Klet, the oldest wine cellar in Slovenia, where we will explore their wine treasury – their archive that includes the oldest Slovenian wine.

TIME AND DURATION

The program in Ptuj’s old town center lasts 4 hours, approximately between 10 AM and 1,30 PM, an afternoon tour between 1 PM and 4,30 PM is also possible by prior arrangement.
