Home of contemporary visual art
The Ptuj City Gallery is a must-see for all contemporary art lovers. Locals often say that Ptuj is the city of noble tradition and rich cultural heritage; however creativity is still very much alive here today, looking for inspiration and reference point in the art of the past.
The City Gallery (Prešernova ulica 29) is located in the main street, in a building with fascinating history. One of the most important chapters of the building’s past is presented with an exhibition put on in the then student dormitory in 1939 by France Mihelič, who taught drawing at the Ptuj grammar school. The showcased works include his painting Mrtvi kurent (Dead Kurent), which is an essential piece of his legacy, as well as one of the most important Slovenian art works created between the two Great Wars.
