Archaeological excavations took place on the site of the Lidl store in Marof between 2004 and 2006. They unearthed the remains of an early medieval settlement from the 7th to 9th century. Remains of simple wooden houses, as well as many everyday objects were discovered.
The settlement dates back to the time when Slavic communities were first recorded in writing in the territory of south-eastern Alps. Today, the term Slavs is used for many communities that spread over almost the entire Central and Eastern Europe in the 6th century. They were influenced by indigenous cultures, while preserving their language and certain customs. Small communities also settled on the ruins of the former Poetovio and its surroundings.
