A fragment of a marble inscription tells the story of the construction of a bridge over the Drava River in Emperor Hadrian’s times (117-138). The original slab was more than five meters big, and once adorned the triumphal arch over the bridge entrance.
As a young officer, Hadrian travelled from Italy to Aquincum (Budapest), and had a large altar dedicated to Jupiter erected in Poetovio. When he became emperor, he supported the development of the young colony by financing the construction or renovation of the 200-meter stone bridge over the Drava River, and the renovation of the main road that led through Poetovio to the north in 132.
