The Ptuj Folk Music Festival is the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in Slovenia. It was first performed in 1969.

Ensembles compete in two categories: classical quintets and other ensembles. At the festival, each ensemble participates with two new compositions that have not yet been played publicly or released on sound recordings and with unpublished texts. An expert commission, appointed by the festival organizer, selects performers from the registered ensembles and evaluates them at a public audition.
