SLOVENIA GREEN WELLNESS ROUTE
A circular themed cycling route for exploring Slovenia’s natural thermal resorts by combining a sustainable way of travel with rejuvenation and relaxation
The new Slovenia Green Wellness Route follows a 16-day itinerary, connecting Slovenia’s natural health resorts, rich cultural heritage, local gastronomy, cycling through amazing natural landscapes, and sustainable hospitality.
Cycling and wellness combined are a winning combination for couples, families, as well as travellers of all kinds.
The itinerary guides cyclists from one amazing place to another in a simple way, helping them to experience this extraordinary country in a different way.
Cyclists can follow the route independently or book a local tour agency. For easier navigation, a free interactive map with around 500 points of interest is available for download.
THE ROUTE
The route is 680 km long , with the lowest and the highest point being 140/940 m.
The circular Green Wellness Route (SGWR) starts in Ljubljana and first turns north towards the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It then turns east, through the Štajerska region and the wine-growing hills over the Pannonian Plain in the sortheasterns part of Slovenia. Then the route turns south, almost reaching the southern border before returning back to the capital of Ljubljana.
In 16 days, cyclists visit the following destinations: Kamnik, Ljubno ob Savinji, Rečica ob Savinji, Velenje, Zreče, Maribor, Lenart, Sveta Ana, Moravske Toplice, Ljutomer, Jeruzalem, Ptuj, Čatež in Brežice, Kostanjevica na Krki, Novo Mesto, Laško, Celje, Šentjur and Žalec.
The length of the daily stages is around 40 kilometres. The route runs on flat as well hilly terrain, on dedicated bicycle paths as well as roads and gravel roads.
GREEN-CERTIFIED TOURIST PROVIDERS ALONG THE WAY
At the end of each stage, cyclists can choose among tourist providers who value sustainability (restaurants and accommodation providers). Many among them are Slovenia Green* certified.
*Ptuj as a destination won the bronze Slovenia Green certification. Panorama Krapša B&B has received the Slovenia Green Accommodation certification as well as the EU Ecolabel. The accommodation is located on a hill overlooking the mighty Ptuj Castle, offering serenity and lush green spaces for relaxaton.
