The oldest open-air lapidarium in Slovenia
When on Slovenski trg, check out the oldest open-air lapidarium in Slovenia. It was named after the curate Simon Povoden, who, in 1830, had ancient monuments found in Ptuj and its surroundings built into the wall of the City Tower. These include fragments from civilian and military tombstones, ashbins, sacrificial altars, dedication plates with reliefs, and square blocks. Also part of the Povoden Museum are the sacrificial altars standing in the niches in the northern wall of the parish church of St. George, and the 5-meter Orpheus Monument made from marble.
POETOVIO ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK:
POVODEN MUSEM – CITY TOWER
The oldest open-air lapidarium in Slovenia can be found in Slovenski Trg. It was named after Simon Povoden, who, in 1830, had Roman tombstones and tribute stones found in Ptuj and its surroundings built into the wall of the town tower to protect them from ruin. They include fragments from civilian and military tombstones, ash chests, sacrificial altars, dedication plates with reliefs, and square blocks. Also part of the Povoden Museum are the sacrificial altars placed in the niches in the northern wall of the parish church of St. George.
Built-in monuments tell the story of life in the town at that time. The inscriptions tell us the names and fates of legionaries, slaves and townspeople, where they came from, what jobs and functions they performed and which deities they worshipped. The supreme god Jupiter, the local cult of wet nurses (Nutrices) and the oriental Serapis and Sol are mentioned. The reliefs are also interesting, especially the seat of honor and the depictions of personifications of seasons.
